Buhr, Lätt, Midtlyng take 2024 honors

Friday, January 3, 2025 - 09:44

It was a blur of a year at the PDGA Majors and on the Elite Series.

More like a Buhr of a year in the MPO division.

Gannon Buhr turned in one of the most dominant disc golf seasons in recent memory, compiling nine total wins, including PDGA Major titles at the 2024 European Open and the United States Disc Golf Championship, to go with seven wins on the Elite Series on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.

The No. 1 player in the Official Disc Golf World Rankings and 2021 PDGA Rookie of the Year became the first player in PDGA history to eclipse $200,000 in tournament winnings in a single season and hit a career-high rating of 1055. With his second USDGC win of his career, Buhr, at 19, became the youngest MPO player to win three PDGA Major titles.

In 24 M/ES events, Buhr turned in 23 top 10 finishes and finished on the podium 13 times.

Buhr finished 257 points ahead of Ricky Wysocki in the 2024 MPO player of the year standings, the largest margin of victory in the MPO player of the year race since Paul McBeth beat Wysocki by 140 points in 2022. It’s the largest deficit in both MPO and FPO behind Kristin Lätt’s 285-point margin in 2023.

Speaking of Lätt, consistency was once again on display in 2024 for the consensus No. 1 FPO player in the world.

Following her dominant 2023 season, Lätt returned in 2024 and finished in the top 10 at all four PDGA Majors, including the largest comeback in PDGA Major history (7 strokes) to win her second-straight European Open title.

That was the second history-setting moment for Lätt in 2024 as she became the first FPO player to reach a PDGA player rating of 1000 in May. She dipped below the four-digit rating briefly but returned to 1000 in November after her win at the DGPT – Green Mountain Championship.

Lätt finished with five wins on the Elite Series, took down the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship and didn’t finish lower than eighth place in 18 events in 2024.

With her 2024 PDGA Player of the Year award, Lätt becomes the seventh player in FPO history to win the title in back-to-back years, joining Vanessa Chambers, Elaine King, Juliana Korver, Des Reading, Valarie Jenkins, Catrina Allen and Paige Pierce.

Ohn Scoggins finished second in the FPO player of the year standings for the second-straight year, 62 points behind Lätt.

Eliezra Midtlyng burst onto the scene in big way in 2023, winning the FJ18 PDGA World Championship by 20 strokes. She garnered more attention by winning the long drive contest at the 2023 PDGA Professional World Championships, where she finished 23rd in her Pro Worlds debut. That set the stage for a top 10 finish at the Throw Pink Championship as she began her professional career.

Taylor Chocek finished second in the FPO rookie of the year standings.

MPO Rookie of the Year Down to the Wire

The race for the 2024 PDGA MPO Rookie of the Year ended in a three-way tie between Aviel Gomez, Luke Levesque and Miles Sayer in the standings. The tiebreaker procedure begins with Total Points in Major Finishes and is followed with Highest Rated Round in an A-Tier or Above.

As a result, the MPO ROY results will not be official until after the January 14 ratings update, as there are impactful 2024 events that are not yet official.
