One of the most anticipated events of the year is finally here as the best players in the world get ready to compete in the 2023 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships presented L.L.Bean in Jeffersonville, VT.

After 14 Elite Series events and two PDGA Majors, players will now have another shot to win the most prestigious title in professional disc golf. Most players will be looking to join an elite list of world champions and past winners will seek to build their legacy.

The PDGA World Championships returns to Smuggler’s Notch Resort for the first time since 2018, when Paige Shue and Gregg Barsby took down their PDGA World titles.

The tournament will be held over five days on the Brewster Ridge and Fox Run Meadows courses. Brewster Ridge, which will be played on rounds 1 and 3, is a shorter, more technical course. Players will have to navigate tight gaps through wooded fairways as any errant shots can leave them scrambling to keep from losing strokes to the field.

Fox Run Meadows will be played on rounds 2, 4, and 5. This course is longer and more open, but features tight OB lining each fairway. Brewster Ridge forces players to be accurate with the shape their shot takes through the air while Fox Run requires players to be accurate with where their disc comes to rest. While some players might choose to play it safe and pick their landing zones to avoid taking a big number, the wide-open fairways at Fox Run can tempt players to take aggressive shots as they attempt to move up the leaderboard in the final rounds.

Each course requires a different skill set, ensuring that the most consistent and well-rounded players will set themselves apart from the field over the course of five rounds. Last year, the World Championships were held at Jones Park and the Emporia Country Club, the same courses used for the Dynamic Discs Open.

Kristin Tattar went wire-to-wire in the 2022 PDGA World Championships, finding herself tied for the lead with Henna Blomroos after round 3, and then with a five-stroke lead going into the final round. Despite a strong performance from Blomroos, Tattar was uncatchable as she went eight-down through the front 9, eventually expanding her lead to eight strokes to take down her first World Championship.

The MPO field saw a battle for first as Aaron Gossage had a breakout performance, taking the solo lead by the end of the second round and playing consistently to give himself a three-stroke lead over Paul McBeth going into the final round. McBeth and Gossage matched each other’s pace to stay deadlocked going into the final few holes. Even after McBeth took a risky approach shot and made a huge 70ft putt on hole17 to take the lead, Gossage closed out with a birdie on hole 18 to tie it up and force a playoff in the MPO field for the second year in a row.

They returned to the iconic hole 16, where Gossage threw his tee shot into the water while McBeth stuck the island and was able to lay up for the win. With his 1st place finish, McBeth not only won his 6th World title, but also continued his pattern of placing 1st or 2nd in every World Championship dating back to 2012. If McBeth can win this year, he will take his 18th Major title and tie Ken Climo for the most Major wins in PDGA History.

With a year full of surprising wins, heartbreaking losses, and dramatic finishes, history is sure to be made at the 2023 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships presented by L.L.Bean.
