Surging Salonen
2024 PDGA Champions Cup — Round 3 FPO Recap
Eveliina Salonen took off on a stretch at Northwood Park surged her to the top of the leaderboard on Friday.
Six-straight birdies on holes 9-14, a run that gave her an 8.65 strokes-gained advantage on the rest of the field, puts Salonen ahead by two strokes heading into Championship Sunday at the 2024 PDGA Champions Cup presented by Bushnell.
The run started with a birdie on 9, the fourth-hardest hole on the course, and ended on 14, the hardest hole on the score score-wise with a 0.89 above par average. Salonen jumped three spots in to the solo lead with the hot round of 7-under.
Salonen cooled a little down the stretch.
Kristin Tattar did not.
Another eagle on 18 from Tattar capped a 4-under through 4-hole stretch finish to pull her within two strokes of Salonen.
Salonen and Tattar each had one bogey, joining Rachel Turton on Friday and Silva Saarinen on Thursday as the only four players to turn in a scorecard with just one bogey. No player has turned in a clean sheet.
Ohn Scoggins finished strong as well to jump to a tie for third place with Turton, who maintained her spot on the lead card heading into Sunday's finale. Both sit a 5-under for the weekend, five behind Salonen.
One more round remains at Northwood Park before a PDGA Major champion is crowned and it's shaping up to be battle to the finish — Salonen for her second Major and the defending Champions Cup champion Tattar for her seventh Major.
