Ryan Monn and Lucas Carmichael set the pace with 5-under rounds in the opening round, which featured swirling winds, sporadic showers and intermittent sunshine, for the 148 players to kick off the 22nd running of this PDGA Major.
But the field is right behind them with 36 holes to go in Michigan.
Monn — the highest-rated player in the field — and Carmichael — the second-highest rated player in the field — each carded two bogies on Friday, one on the front and one on the back half of the famed and demanding track. Monn birdied four-of-five down the stretch and Carmichael added three-straight birdies on 14, 15 and 16, capped with a highlight-reel putt on 16.
Three players are within two strokes, Ian Krajna and Kolten Patterson will round out the lead card and Tanner Young will lead the chase card. He'll be joined by Ethan Owens and Luke Conway at 2-under and Landon Brooks at 1-under.
Krajna set the early pace at 3-under as several players in the field rose and fell up the leaderboard. He carded his only bogey on hole 2 and was one of just two players in the field to card just one bogey. Patterson was similar with two bogies early and then a clean finish.
In total, 21 players are within five strokes of the lead — a margin that can shrink quickly on these hills and in the rough of Toboggan.
