Get ready for the 2023 USDGC and TPWDGC!

Wednesday, October 4, 2023 - 11:18

As the 2023 season enters the final stretch, the best of the best in disc golf has once again made its way to Rock Hill, South Carolina for the 2023 United States Disc Golf Championship and Throw Pink Women’s Championship.

The USDGC is the final PDGA Pro Major of the year while the TPWDGC is a PDGA A-Tier, and both tournaments will take place simultaneously at the Winthrop Arena. While most other tournaments offer divisions based on gender or age, the USDGC combines all players who qualify into a single division.

Winthrop University’s Disc Golf Course has been the site of the USDGC since its inception in 1999, the same year it also hosted the original Women’s National Championship (later renamed the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship). Winthrop Arena is a challenging course that showcases the skills of the best players in the world by focusing on shot-shaping and placement, rather than pure distance.

Nearly every fairway is lined with tight OB, often forcing players to throw over OB or hazard areas to get to the green. The risk/reward factor sets up plenty of potential scoring separation as a few feet might make the difference between a birdie or taking a big number. With multiple water carries, elevation changes, and triple mandos, this course is sure to challenge the skill set of the best players on tour.

Winthrop Arena has some truly iconic holes including the triple mando through the bamboo wall on hole 7 and the island green of hole 17. The penultimate hole has seen drama in the past as players walk up to the tee in the final round knowing this hole could make or break their entire tournament. If their tee shot doesn’t make it to the island, or even if their disc lands in bounds but rolls into the water just behind, players will have to re-tee two more times before advancing to the drop zone. As the weekend goes on and the pressure builds, that island green looks smaller and smaller every time.

Holes 17 and 13 will feature A and B positions with the A positions played in rounds 1 and 4, while the B positions are played in Round 2 and 3.

Catrina Allen took the early lead in Round 2 of the 2022 TPWDGC and found herself with a six-stroke lead going into the final round. Kristin Tattar had a slow start to her tournament but made a charge, eventually getting within two strokes as the lead card approached the final hole. Tattar’s second shot went OB, leaving Allen free to lay up and take a par for the win. With one last putt, Allen took her fourth victory on tour in 2022.

The leaderboard was tight going into the final round of the 2022 USDGC with Niklas Anttila in the lead just one stroke ahead of second place. By hole 16, Gannon Buhr had caught up to Anttila and a 61-foot birdie putt on hole 17 gave Buhr a one-stroke advantage going into the final hole. Buhr took a birdie on the final hole, finishing his 12-under round with five birdies in a row and beating Anttila by just one stroke. The 2021 Rookie of the Year won his first Major victory at the 2022 USDGC before winning his first Elite Series later on in the 2023 season.

With one last Major in the season, the pressure is on as the best players in the world take on the 2023 United States Disc Golf Championship and Throw Pink Women’s Championship.
