After the West Coast Swing and the Zoo Town Open last weekend, the Disc Golf Pro Tour now returns to Emporia, Kansas for the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open.

The Dynamic Discs Open started as the Glass Blown Open in 2003 as a PDGA B-Tier, eventually becoming an A-tier and then a National Tour Elite Series event in 2015. In 2020, it was announced that the event would be known as the Dynamic Discs Open moving forward and made its first appearance with the new title in 2021. 2022 marked the Dynamic Disc Open’s first time on the Disc Golf Pro Tour and it will now return as an Elite Series event as well as the 15th stop on the 2023 DGPT calendar.

While the pros competing in the 2022 Dynamic Discs Open played four rounds split between Jones Park Supreme and Emporia Country Club, all three rounds of the 2023 DDO will be played at the Emporia Country Club course. The Emporia Country Club Championship Course is a 9,933-foot par 70 for the FPO field and an 11,242 foot par 67 for the MPO field. Disc golf fans will recognize Emporia Country Club as one of the two courses played in last year’s PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships.

Emporia is a ball-golf style course; not as tightly wooded as the Glendoveer courses of the Portland Open, but featuring more trees and rough than the relatively open fairways of the Las Vegas Challenge’s Wildhorse property. As with other ball-golf courses, players will need to balance taking distance off the tee while picking their landing zones to avoid the OB surrounding nearly every hole. Shorter par 3’s like Holes 11 and 12 feature guarded greens that challenge accuracy and the water carries on Holes 16 and 18 will force players to choose between a safe layup and a risky birdie.

The 2022 Dynamic Disc Open saw howling winds wreaking havoc on the FPO and MPO fields for the first three rounds. Players watched their discs fly out of bounds as they struggled to string together pars. The final round finally calmed down a little, allowing players to finish strong at the end of a tough weekend.

After starting the weekend with a six-over opening round, Kristin Tattar bounced back to take the lead in Round 2 and eventually found herself with a four-stroke lead going into the fourth and final round. Catrina Allen was right behind, shooting six-for-six to start off the final round, finally taking the lead by Hole 14. Allen was ahead by one stroke going into the island Hole 16, but despite going for the safe layup play, Allen’s par putt chained out into the water. Tattar took par while Allen took a double bogey, giving Tattar a one-stroke lead that held through the next two holes to give Tattar her second Elite Series win of the season.

Tattar would later make it a sweep in Emporia later in 2022 with her first PDGA World Championship title.

While the MPO field also experienced plenty of leaderboard shake-ups in the first three windy rounds of the 2022 Dynamic Discs Open, Ricky Wysocki battled through to start off the final round with a four-stroke lead. Even with other players taking advantage of the relatively calm conditions, Wysocki held on to his lead the entire final round, ending with a six-stroke lead over Simon Lizotte, who shot up to second place from the chase card with a six-under hot round.

While the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, winds are predicted to stay below 10mph throughout the weekend. As long as the conditions can hold out, we can expect to see much hotter scores at the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open.
