PDGA Euro Tour # 2 - Konopiště Open
DAY 1 - friday
FPO
Estonian Anneli Tõugjas-Männiste (Team Discmania) has managed to get the first position at PDGA Euro Tour #2 - Konopiště Open thanks to two turkeys in the back nine that allowed her to finish with a score of five-under-par.
Tõugjas-Männiste holds a two-throw lead ahead of a trio formed by Swedish Sofie Björlycke, Estonian Kristi Unt, who delighted the gallery with a spectacular throw in on hole 9 and a basket-hitting ace run in hole 10.
The UK's Rachel Turton, has made her way back to mainland Europe after competing in UK and USA, and will round out the FPO lead card for round two on Saturday.
MPO
A huge roar surprised us all in the warm-up area caused by the spectacular 122 m downhill hole 1 aced by Danish Hjalte Jensen: you literaly can’t start a tournament better than that!
After the great duel between Paul McBeth and Jakub Semerád that we enjoyed in Pro Forester (Croatia), first stop of the 2023 PDGA Euro Tour, Czech crowds gathered before the start of the round, and the gallery started to follow the lead card with excitement.
Front 9 ended with a tie at-3 and it became clear that the American and the Czech weren't going to be the only contenders.
Finnish Roni Rönkkönen, recent winner of the RPM Open inLille Leland (Norway), considered probably the toughest pro-level course in Europe, took the lead with a great-10 that could have been even better if his putt for birdie in hole 17 wouldn’t have rolled to OB.
His fellow countryman Daniel Davidsson tied him some minutes later with a bogey-free round in which shines the only Eagle of the field in hole 3.
Paul snared 6 birdies in the Back 9, but took 3 bogies that were too heavy to climb to first position, later admitting that his forehand had been completely off.
Local hero Jakub Semerád, constantly applauded by the crowd, tied at-10 with a stellar 7 birdies in a row in Back 9.
But it was the last winner on this course – Niklas Anttila at the 2021 European Championships – who gave one more twist and raised the bar up to a bogey-free-11 round that gave him the lead in his first tournament in the Old Continent after his long tour across the USA.
The stakes are high for tomorrow, both in FPO and in MPO! The leaders, Anneli Tõugjas-Männiste and Niklas Anttila, are both followed by three players tied for second place. Watch live on the Disc Golf Network
